The above link speaks about this exact experiment from a scientific perspective.  However I would like to state that it looked real to me.  

Unofficial Museum of the Equator

This the more interesting of the two museums. 

Instead of dry information boards about the various indigenous peoples, there are gardens and statues.  An English or Spanish speaking guide takes each group through the displays.

For example this is a model of an indigenous burial site.  The guide told us that a shaman would have been buried here.  His wife would have been buried alive with him.  She would have been given a beverage made from a plant to put her to sleep so that she wouldn't know what was happening. 

Here we are at the actual equator.  This unofficial museum is on the equator while the other museum is not.  It is impossible to do a drunk test walk on the equator.  I tried it.  There is something about that place that makes it impossible to walk a straight line with your eyes closed and your arms extended. 

This square stone block is a sundial.  At the equator the sun shines straight down rendering normal sundials useless. It is two sided with each half being used for half the year.

The Middle of the Earth Official Museum

Ecuador is named for its location at the equator.  A short drive from the center of Quito there are two museums which address this topic.  We hired a driver for the day who took us to both museums.

At the official museum there is a long path up to the monument.

Along the path there are statues and information about the scientific expedition to discover the equator.

Monkey see, monkey do.  We saw some other tourists taking pictures this way.  I hope theirs turned out better.

Upon entering the monument one finds stairs for climbing to the viewing platform.

After viewing all around, the descent is through the ethnographic museum.  There are displays of all the different types of indigenous peoples found in Ecuador.  There is even a shrunken head on display with information about the group who engaged in that practice.

 

There are restaurants, small display buildings with exhibits (for example insects of the country and photographs of volcanoes) and crafts for tourists to purchase.

Quito - La Vieja Cuba Hotel

Our room was the second door on the right.

 We landed in Quito at 11 pm.  I arranged transport to the hotel from the airport. It was dark during the ride so it was impossible to see how cute the hotel was until morning.  This hotel was an awesome find.  It is located very near the tourist area yet it is quiet.  The staff went out of their way to help us.  They even got us a driver for the day when we wanted to tour outside the city.  www.hotelviejacuba.com
